1st NCC Conference a great success

Last month, on Tuesday 13th September, the NCC hosted its 1st Annual Conference, held jointly with ACCIS. The conference, held at the National Composites Centre, attracted nearly 300 delegates and showcased the latest developments in composites research and manufacture.

Delegates from industry and academia gathered in the workshop space of the National Composites Centre, which featured an exhibit area, including a full size C-class catamaran and a cross section of an aircraft wing. The space provided an interesting backdrop for attendees to browse poster displays featuring recent ACCIS research developments and entries from the NCC and University of Bristol Images of Composites Research competition.

Morning presentations in the staged area of the workshop drew on current research within ACCIS. After a welcoming introduction by Professor Michael Wisnom, guest speaker Professor Ignaas Verpoest, Chairman of Leuven Materials Research Centre, delivered an overview of recent developments in the toughening of composites. Presentations from ACCIS academics, Dr Valeska Ting, Professor Stephen Hallett, Dr Wendel Sebastian and Professor Kevin Potter followed. The morning was rounded off by a series of one minute quickfire deliveries by ACCIS researchers and a prize giving for winners of the Images of Composites Research Competition.

The afternoon event was introduced by the NCC Chief Technology Officer, Dr Enrique Garcia. The NCC gave an array of presentations outlining the capabilities and latest advances in composite manufacturing specifically across the fields of design and simulation, materials and processes, and digital manufacturing.

The day proved to be both informative and rewarding as a valuable networking opportunity, and stimulated some great ideas for future opportunities.

The NCC looks forward to building on this success with future annual conferences to come.
