Tier 1 Member, Rolls-Royce, opens up new advanced manufacturing facility in Bristol

The NCC is proud to announce that Tier 1 Member Rolls-Royce has received research and innovation funding from a government-backed public-private sector partnership to establish a new advanced manufacturing facility in Bristol.

This state-of-the-art facility, located on its Patchway complex, is part of the company's SILOET programme to accelerate the development and introduction of low-carbon aircraft engine technology and is likely to employ as many as 40 people when in full production next year.

The factory will continue to support and continue the development of the findings in the £4 million project, ENABLES, that focused on addressing build time challenges and in-service reliability feedback on traditional fan case dressings. The ENABLES programme developed a system that embeds the complex network of dressings into composite rafts. This innovative composite technology delivers significant benefits including a 30% part count reduction, weight reduction, build time/cost savings and a predicted 50% reduction of in-service reliability issues.

The project delivered a proven capable manufacturing process suitable for first industrial application including:

  • Process development & optimisation
  • Non-Destructive Examination (NDE), measurement and inspection techniques
  • Concept design for next generation of raft with integral electrical connector
  • Initial test materials for high temperature and fluid carrying capability completed

The high-temperature, composite raft technology is earmarked for Trent 1000-TEN and Trent 7000 engines that will power Boeing 787 and Airbus A330neo airliners from next year.

The National Composites Centre, was a partner is the two-year ENABLES project, alongside some of our fellow HVM Catapult centres such as the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre in Rotherham and the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry. We were delighted to support this project and look forward to continued work with Rolls-Royce in the field of composite manufacturing technology development.

We hope to support future collaberative research and development programmes like the ENABLES project. Through our state-of-the-art faciltiies and experienced composites specialist staff, we aim to be the hub of the UK's effort to develop and implement rapid composite manufacturing technologies and systems. The NCC can offer industry expertise in areas such as Advanced Composites Manufacture, Design and Simulation, Digital Manufacturing, Automation and Tooling and Materials and Processes.
