NCC Tier 2 Member, Heraeus Noblelight, receives Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Innovation 2015
NCC Tier 2 Member Heraeus, the photonics solutions provider, was presented with the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise: Innovation by Sir Hugh Duberly KCVO, CBE, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire. The Lord-Lieutenant, along with other Cambridge dignitaries and guests, was in attendance to see Debbie Playle, Heraeus Noblelight's Managing Director, receive the award given in recognition of the company's ground-breaking progress in the automated manufacture of flash lamps.
To win the Queen's Award, outstanding innovation over 2 years, or continuous innovation/development over 5 years must be demonstrated. Heraeus Noblelight's unique manufacturing process combines electrical, mechanical and technological components to create a fully-automated single-flow production process, using proprietary auto-assembly equipment to replicate complex, highly-skilled tasks. The new process enables higher production yields, greater manufacturing flexibility, improved product consistency and extended lamp lifetime.
Technical Director, Jeremy Woffendin, explains: “Our specialist lamps are used in areas as diverse as industrial laser processing and cosmetic hair removal where short lead times and consistent delivery of lamps is critical. This advance has allowed us to flex our capacity in these markets to meet fluctuating demands and thereby win market share. In turn, Heraeus Noblelight has been able to re-invest and develop new products, such as our flash sintering module for the printed electronics market, enabling us to become a photonics systems supplier- in addition to a lamp manufacturer and supplier”.
“This award acknowledges the hard work and expertise within our company, which has been advancing lamp technology since 1978. It is testimony to the culture of innovation which underpins our activities here on the Science Park”, commented Debbie Playle, Managing Director.
The presentation coincided with the opening of Heraeus Noblelight's new Cambridge's Science Park office complex which brings together the production, research and business arms of the company in one bespoke site.
Heraeus Noblelight won the Queen’s Award for Export in 1990 and 1995
