Tracking the use and condition of machinery in real-time to better predict servicing requirements

In this challenge, more traditional methods of maintenance activities will be compared with the ability to use sensors and wireless technologies to monitor and predict in real-time, the health and usage of fixed assets such as materials and equipment. Potential new business models for the servitisation of products and machines that capitalise on digital monitoring capability will be published as part of the study.

A digital passport will be produced which will catalogue and maintain a record of the manufacturing, design, and process assurance of the final product but also the carbon footprint of the product being produced, a key metric to addressing sustainability.

A comparison of 4G technologies will be compared with higher bandwidth solutions (cameras, accelerometers, power meters, and other sensors) using a private 5G network. Where 5G solutions show significant benefit, these will be implemented and showcased for key use cases, culminating in the publication of the results and findings.
