Reduced journey times for customers

Research marks start of move towards lighter trains

London Underground (LU) is exploring ways to reduce delays for customers by trialling lighter Tube train doors using award-winning innovative aerospace technology. LU's Innovation Team has led a group of industry experts including the NCC, Atkins UK, Wabtec Rail and UCL to explore using materials previously only used in aerospace composite materials to construct a commercially viable, lightweight train door.

On Wednesday 6th August 2014, Business Development Director, Tom Hitchings, attended the Regional Growth Fund Round 6 Roadshow event at the University of Portsmouth. There was a good attendance from a number of companies across a variety of sectors and Finance Birmingham’s AMSCI presentation at the end of the day proved especially popular.

The £3.2 billion Regional Growth Fund (RGF) supports eligible projects and programmes that are also raising private sector investment to create economic growth and sustainable employment.  Round 6 of the RGF opened on 19 June 2014.

The NCC supported the Composites UK and HS2 Technical Directorate in a one-day drop-in showcase event at the Building Centre on 14th July to enable High Speed 2 (HS2) engineers, specifiers, contractors, and the wider engineering community to gain a better understanding of what composite materials are, where they are already used and how they might be utilised effectively in the HS2 line.
