Solutions

Composites are already supporting sustainability and helping companies meet their low carbon goals by dramatically reducing weight without impacting their performance, enabling critical renewable energy sources. Composites are making aircraft more fuel efficient, increasing the range of electric vehicles, and helping companies build huge wind turbine blades to power our homes. This initiative will harness our world-leading composites research and technology capabilities to make zero impact composites a reality. And it will ensure the UK continues to lead the way in sustainable materials and capitalise on the huge opportunities for recycling of valuable materials to protect our precious resources for future generations.

Alternative recycling routes

Further development of alternative recycling routes for both carbon and glass would strengthen the UK’s position as a world leader in developing sustainable composites.

Use sustainable feedstock

Consider bio-based or recycled alternatives to petroleum-derived materials. Bio and natural feedstock can isolate carbon during growth, and making use of recyclate can prevent valuable materials entering the waste stream.

Enabling technologies

Initiate and develop enabling technologies for the automotive, aircraft and wind turbine disassembly and recycling service sector in the UK.

Supply chains

Develop interconnected and communicative supply chains to accelerate industry growth and anchor the UK as world-leading for sustainable composites.
