Engineering confidence into clean energy innovation

Helping Solar Capture take its integrated solar roof tile from prototype to market

Making low-carbon technologies practical, certifiable and commercially scalable takes more than a good idea. It takes engineering rigour, real-world manufacturing routes and the kind of product confidence that accelerates approvals.

Solar Capture, a specialist in photovoltaic innovation, partnered with NCC to do just that -  turning a smart concept for an integrated solar roof tile into a viable product for the UK housing and infrastructure sectors.

Proving it works - and can be made at scale

Solar roof tiles need to do a lot more than generate energy. They need to install easily, perform reliably, and meet strict fire and weatherproofing standards - all while maintaining the appearance and function of traditional roofing.

NCC worked with Solar Capture to validate the composite structure, optimise the design for repeatable manufacturing, and create confidence in the production process - moving the technology beyond early-stage prototyping.

Certification achieved - MCS and BROOF(t4)

Following this foundational work, Solar Capture has now secured full MCS 012 and MCS 005 certification - a UK requirement for performance and safety in solar roofing products. The tile has also achieved BROOF(t4) fire classification, the highest standard for external fire performance.

These approvals unlock access to large-scale housing and retrofit markets, where compliance is non-negotiable.

Gaining ground - from housing to infrastructure

Market reception has been strong. Installers have responded positively to the tile’s ease of use and seamless fit, and Solar Capture is now running live demo days and building partnerships with developers, housing providers and supply chain partners.

The technology is also proving its value in harsher environments. Solar Capture recently won a four-year, multi-million-pound contract with the General Lighthouse Authorities of the UK and Ireland, supplying solar panels for critical marine navigation infrastructure. A clear signal of confidence in the product’s durability, performance and design flexibility.

What’s next

With certification in place and early market traction underway, Solar Capture is now scaling up production, supporting installer training, and expanding deployment across both housing and infrastructure.

A shared success story in UK clean energy innovation - and an example of how NCC supports manufacturers to move faster, with confidence.
