National Composites Centre participates in Horizon Europe GREEN-LOOP project

02 January 2023

The National Composites Centre (NCC) is delighted to announce its participation in the GREEN-LOOP project, funded under the Horizon Europe Programme, which will focus on developing novel bio-based materials utilising sustainable manufacturing methods.

GREEN-LOOP is a research-intensive innovation project aiming to enhance and support the bioeconomy at European level through robust product design adapted to new sustainable and circular schemes, reducing the cost of manufacture and accelerating the market introduction of novel bio-based products.

Three value chains will be implemented and three new bio-based products will be produced:

  • Multifunctional rubber panels with fire resistance and vibrational applications
  • Bioplastic bottle closures for oil and fruit juice
  • Wood composites bearings for plastic injection machines

The products will aim for better mechanical, physical and chemical properties compared with conventional materials. They will ensure a substantially lower environmental footprint, being non-toxic, demonstrating recyclability, reusability, and refurbish ability.

The NCC is leading the development of the multifunctional rubber panels, which will be applied to the construction and infrastructure sector.

The GREEN-LOOP consortium is comprised of 17 partners from eight countries across Spain, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, United Kingdom, Austria, Portugal, and Poland.

GREEN-LOOP’s vision includes the retrofitting and electrification of conventional manufacturing systems to adapt to new bio-based production, advanced control with monitoring, artificial intelligence and sustainable designs of final products.

The project builds on the strong knowledge and expertise of partners in the addressable scientific and industrial areas highlighting the application of academic research to industrial use cases and progression to commercial success.
