Welcome to Issue 4 of the DETI Newsletter. In this issue we unpack the building blocks of digitisation and reflect on the learnings from DETI's Enabling Capabilities programme. We meet Lindsay Gibbons, a new STEM returner at CFMS, and introduce the 'Eco-meter', a proof-of-concept application developed to calculate the carbon footprint within manufacturing. We hear from 'WeCount' and DETI Skills who have developed a series of educational resources to allow children to safely make their way to school, and congratulate UWE Bristol Engineering who have been chosen to showcase work from DETI Skills at COP26, and the University of Bath on their new People-Led Digitalisation Research Centre to support UK manufacturing.

Working in partnership with DETI, CFMS is committed to supporting STEM returners. With the UK needing an estimated 124,000 new engineers and technicians a year to meet a shortfall in skilled labour, the sector can no longer afford to ignore the huge pool of talent made up of women looking to restart their careers. In this article, we introduce Lindsay Gibbons, a new STEM returner at CFMS.
Digital Catapult has partnered with the National Composites Centre (NCC) to drive innovation in the design and manufacturing of composites using Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, developing software that uses cutting-edge technology to calculate carbon footprint more accurately. This has culminated in a successful proof of concept for an application called the ‘eco-meter’.
WeCount, led by UWE Bristol, is a project that equips households, community centres and schools with low-cost traffic sensors to count cars, bikes, pedestrians and heavy vehicles, as well as the speed of cars. To allow children to safely make their way to school, without the need to breathe in polluted air and to arrive in a timely manner, EU citizen science project WeCount, together with DETI Skills has launched a series of educational resources for KS2 and KS4 pupils.
A new planetarium show designed with the Engineering department at UWE Bristol has been chosen to showcase sustainability solutions at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021. Designed with planetarium experts Explorer Dome, it is part of the Inspire educational work from the Digital Engineering Technology & Innovation (DETI) Skills team at UWE Bristol.
The University of Bath will lead a new £5m People-Led Digitalisation Research Centre to support UK manufacturing companies with the uptake of digital technology. Digital technologies have the potential to transform manufacturing by increasing productivity and opening up new business opportunities. However, the UK has had lower levels of adoption than some of our competitors.
On 11 – 13 October 2021, the Youth Engineering for Environmental Sustainability Summit (YEESS), a new initiative from the Digital Engineering Technology & Innovation (DETI) Inspire educational team at UWE Bristol, gave young people a voice to mitigate the impact climate change has on their futures.
