Pioneering composite manufacturing for clean maritime

Validating a novel single-shot process for advanced marine structures - supporting Creative Composites in the delivery of a next-generation hydrofoil component.

The challenge

Creative Composites is at the forefront of advanced composite manufacturing and were tasked with manufacturing a high-performance hydrofoil control surface for a next-generation electric vessel. The component required extreme dimensional accuracy, structural efficiency, and durability in challenging marine environments.

With an innovative, single-shot lay-up approach defined, Creative Composites partnered with NCC to independently validate and optimise the process, ensuring robust, repeatable delivery for a high-profile clean maritime programme.

What NCC did

NCC provided targeted R&D support to further optimise an established manufacturing route and support production readiness.

  • Independent review of the proposed lay-up process to confirm robustness and identify optimisation opportunities
  • Technical insight into fibre placement and handling to reduce variability
  • Evaluation of process repeatability to support reliable, first-time manufacture and future scale-up

The collaboration focused on assurance and optimisation, reinforcing a proven approach rather than redefining it.

The Outcome

Through this applied R&D support, Creative Composites:

  • Demonstrated that their novel manufacturing route met stringent precision and performance requirements
  • Established a validated, repeatable process definition for similar components
  • Delivered a critical hydrofoil component, on time, first time, and to specification

In parallel, the project reinforced Creative Composites’ position as a leader in advanced composites, building capability that is both innovative and production ready.

Why it matters

This demonstrates how NCC enables innovation to move faster, providing independent validation so that UK manufacturers can lead, whether in automotive, aerospace or the rapid growing clean maritime sector.

We don’t take over. We support what’s already working - and make it stronger.
