Accelerating sustainable materials & technology for wind turbine blades

Wind turbine blades have presented the wind industry with a challenge. The industry is

striving for zero waste and 100% reuse, repurposing or recycling of its assets. However, the current end-of-life solutions for wind turbine blades are largely confined to landfill disposal and energy recovery through incineration.

SusWIND, launched in 2021 by NCC in partnership with the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, is a joint industry programme advancing a circular economy for large structure composites by driving innovation in recycling and sustainable supply chains.

By channelling investment into the most promising approaches (technically, environmentally and economically) the UK can form a functioning supply chain that promotes and facilitates circularity. The impact of a material solution that is viable, sustainable and low carbon extends across multiple industries including renewable energy, transportation and infrastructure.

The Programme board, directing the technical work and receiving the technical insights includes Vestas, SSE Renewables, EDF Renewables, Total Energies, bp and Scottish Power Renewables.
