Introduction to Design for Composites

If you're new to designing composite materials this course will give you the tools & techniques you need to confidently develop robust concept designs.

Or perhaps your business is making the shift from traditional materials to composites and you'd like an essential insight into the possibilities and key considerations when using new materials.

To ensure that we get the maximum benefit out of composite materials they must be carefully designed and often tailored to a specific use case. If the initial requirements capture is not thorough and balanced to maximise every element, the final design may not be fit for purpose.

This course will give you an understanding of the requirements that are important to consider in the composites world, along with a series of tools and techniques that will enable you to create robust concept designs for every new project you undertake.

• The important design requirements to capture for composites

Materials and Manufacturing

• The key range of thermoset and thermoplastic matrices used including biobased versions
• How to select fibre types, forms and material formats
• The key manufacturing processes used and their effect on the material properties

Design Considerations

• The key terminology used when building a composite laminate
• Using the rule of mixtures when creating a composite material
• How the strength and stiffness properties are predicted
• How to apply a range of design guidelines for laminate stacking sequences, geometry design and tooling design

Joining

• Comparing the differences between mechanically fastened and chemically bonded joints
• The practical considerations for fastener and adhesive selection within a composite joint
